Journal 52: That Thing You Love

This week’s Journal 52 prompts were reflective of ‘That Thing You Love’ or That Thing You Hate’.

Since I have a natural bent toward the negative and work very hard to ensure positivity in my daily life, I chose to focus on what I love.  And with no surprise, A.D. is involved.

So I can’t remember what year we first went to Acadia.  I feel like it was around 2012.  What I do remember is an evening spent on the rocks of Schoodic Point, with a couple of sandwiches from a local deli and some home-made wild blueberry pie, waiting for sunset long after everyone else had given up and driven off.

I remember the feel of the wind against my face, the crash of the waves as they broke against the rocky shore and the complete sense of peace, waiting and watching.

This is the scene of a memory that I have used in the past several years when I’m feeling particularly stressed and need to escape.  It is one of several special memories I use for this purpose.  We all need our special places.

A Thing I LoveI picked one of the photos from this scene to draw.  You can check out more pics on A.D.’s The Explorographer site. It’s a happy place.

So, I started off with my pencils to rough sketch out the basics of the scene.  I used the new skills I’m learning in perspective from an online course and it feels like it’s a little better than some of the past attempts.

I also used the Sennelier watercolors and my Micron pens in 005, 02 and 08 to get depth.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this story today.  We are going back this summer to share it with our friends and I’m excited to draw this scene and others like it in Acadia plein air.

I think it will be a wonderful way to spend the time, wind on my face, waiting for that amazing finale to a day.
