Sketchy: Drawing with Line, Tone and Detail

The assignment I worked on this week in the perspective course was to draw with attention to line, tone and detail.  As is my nature, I share what I feel I am successful at as well as perceived failures and this is certainly the latter.

The most frustrating part is that when I started working on all of this, I felt like I was good a drawing plants!  This is not the case for this piece.  My ferns lack luster.

The Inspiration

inspiration for a study on line, tone and detailThe photo I chose for inspiration had a good range of tones to work with and had good memories attached.  Perfect. It was from an excursion in December 2015 to Taughannock Falls and a gentle hike up the lower trail, just after I was given my new camera.

I had a good time despite feeling that I might freeze to death.  As always, my gaze goes downward and I pick up on the small scenes versus the larger landscapes.

This isn’t typically a bad thing and I had truly enjoyed myself throughout the day, but I hadn’t done anything with the photos from that trip.  I think part of me is looking for the photos to be something more than they are.

The Drawing with Line, Tone and Detail…Kind Of…

IMG_20160327_141157The intent was good at least.

The drawing doesn’t have a lot of depth, a sense of what is going on or honestly many redeeming qualities.  I do like the colors and the watercolor honestly did the most to attempt to save it.

I think I will definitely be going back to the drawing board on this perspective test and will try another attempt at drawing with line, tone and detail.

Some people might be wondering why I shared this at all, it isn’t good.  But it does a better job at expressing perseverance than I could ever express in words.

Keep drawing, keep trying, keep improving.
